Buff Polish Chick with Book

Buff Polish Chicks love the book!

“Just A Couple Of Chickens” is a genuinely enjoyable read – Laugh out loud funny, informative and utterly timely.

It is a poignant and very real story of one family’s poultry raising adventure during a five-year crucible of economic and identity crisis that took on national relevance when their contracting business collapsed under the first wave of the economic crash in 2008. Their story hits home with heart-breaking reality.

While getting a couple of chickens may have been Andrew’s idea, Corinne took it over the top with thirty fluffy pheasant, five and twenty chickens, over forty Chukar, and fifteen ducklings. There were twelve smelly quail, nine girl geese, two roosters, and a partridge in a pine tree.

They were farming by Internet on a two-acre parcel near Santa Fe, New Mexico and scrabbling through the canyon that separates knowledge and experience when it comes to raising poultry… and a family.

Cuckoo Maran Chicks with the book

Corinne created www.TheFeatheredEgg.com, a web-based business that arose like a phoenix from the eggs and feathers of the flock. The business and the family moved to Portland, Oregon in 2010 in a (literal) search for greener pastures.

Readers report that it is the most enjoyable read they’ve had in years. A book they couldn’t put down, and didn’t have to have poultry to enjoy.

It is a real life memoir and a chicken how-to book,  filled with a compelling reality. It also tells the story of how the website business www.The Feathered Egg.com was created.

So far, more than 1,500 copies have sold in over 90 retail locations nationwide. It is available at amazon.com, here through the author, and by special order in every bookstore – pretty much, everywhere.

The Sequel

…. answering the popular question – Where are all your birds now? What did you do next?

For up-to-date details on whassup with the sequel/prequel, check out my blog posts in the “About Just a Couple of Chickens” category (or possibly “Just A Couple More” which is the future book title)  on this site. I’ve also got fun content posting at www.TheFreeRooster.comabout chickens, eggs, and life in current economic times (aka The Great Depression 2.0.)  I’m trying to avoid the question above…. the answer is proving unpopular with the urban chicken movement. We did give away some of the chickens, most of the turkeys, and all of the geese and ducks – well, the second bevy of ducks. The other birds are safe… in the freezer.

We are in transition from urban-transplant-wannabe farmers to rural-refugee backyard chicken enthusiasts, and the sequel writes itself. I need only live these strange times to garner material for Book Two – aimed for completion….. real soon. The sequel weaves a tapestry out of two timelines… what we did after, and what went before. Revisiting the sights, sounds, and endless vistas of the location on the banks of the Pecos River, and chronicling our version of (re)building our American Dream through hard work and persistence in Portland, Oregon.
